Since the inception of our company, doing social good was one of the founding principles of Happee. Our co-founders Peeyush and Leticia share a common dream of uplifting Indian artisans and providing equal and better economic opportunities to the ones in need.
We have revamped our social aspect of our business to make a complete circle / closed loop in order to have long lasting and generation impact. We started a new partnership with Praveen Lata Sansthan, in Jaipur. The NGO focuses in empowering girls from the slums, poorer economic background by providing them education, health awareness and work opportunities.
At these communities, women stay home with the kids, and are not encouraged to study or work. They become financially vulnerable, don't pursue dreams of their own and stay home taking care of the house and their kids.
We have an ongoing program with the NGO where young women (16 years old onwards) learn stitching skills, so they can earn money through it in the future. However, they suffer from constant quality issues, as these women do not have any knowledge about quality control or finishing, which hampers their ability to make clothes for a living.
They are also being taught about finishing, quality standards, pattern making, fitting, types of fabrics, calculating costs and other useful skills that prepare them to not only work as seamstresses, but that prepare them to take different orders as well.
We are preparing them for future opportunities in the field of stitching and tailoring, with an aim of making these girls fully economically independent and provide them work for Happee Products as well in the near future. Our aim is to impact over 60 girls by the end of 2020 with minimum success rate of 30%.
For centuries, menstruation has been considered a social stigma in India. To this day in many areas, women on their period are not allowed in temples, in their kitchens, and are considered as untouchables during their menstruation period.
Millions of Indian women and girls remain unaware about how to manage their monthly menstrual cycles in a safe and hygienic way, which can put their lives at risk.
In large swathes of rural India, as well as some urban areas, women are considered impure and segregated when menstruating. They are forced to sleep in separate "menstruation huts," which are often cowsheds or barns.
Poverty and a general lack of awareness of health issues pushes them even closer to death as they are prone to infections while bleeding or lead to further diseases related to their reproductive health.
A National Family Health Survey conducted from 2015-16 show that only 58 percent of women aged 15-24 use hygienic ways of dealing with their menstrual flows due to a lack of access to and awareness of sanitary napkins. Many resort to using unwashed clothes, leaves, hay, or even sand to absorb the blood, often resulting in infections.
According to a study by Nielsen and Plan India, of the 355 million females who are of a menstruating age in the country, only 12 percent use sanitary napkins. Published studies in 2014 show that nearly 23 million girls drop out of school each year when they begin to menstruate due to a lack of hygienic facilities and a poor awareness of menstruation in general.
Poor menstrual hygiene can lead to a range of troubling issues, including fungal, bacterial, reproductive and urinary tract infections, or even worse to infertility. Reproductive tract infections also make women more susceptible to cervical cancer, while dietary restrictions due to poverty can lead to anaemia. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India accounts for 27 percent of the world's cervical cancer deaths, almost twice the global average. Poor menstrual hygiene is cited as a major cause.
At Happee we decided as much as women empowerment is important, it is also important that we work on improving the health and well-being of women, because it’s a universal fact that women are the future.
We strongly believe that by taking up the issue of menstrual hygiene and sanitation, we can truly empower the underprivileged young girls and women. A kit of 5 reusable, 100% biodegradable, antibacterial sanitary pads can take care of women for 5 years.
For every product sold, we will give away one pad for the women, and for every 5 products we will be able to take care of sanitation and menstrual health of 1 woman for next 5 years. This not just all, as a sustainable brand, by donating these pads we are also helping reducing the waste produced and the CO2 emissions produced by regular plastic sanitary pads by curbing it through reusable sanitary pads.
So if you buy from us, you are not just a part of fashion revolution, but also a part of massive social impact for the women in India.
Help us in making this world a better place to live in. One Product, One Pad
